Universal Orlando has now shuttered the nighttime show Universal’s Cinematic Spectacular – 100 Years of Movie Memories. It closed at the end of the summer season and it will not return, and honestly, it’s for the best.

As folks used to the spectacle, music, and emotion attached to Disney’s nighttime spectaculars, we found Universal Studios’ show extremely underwhelming. It felt like a low budget version of World of Color.

But the good news is that Universal will return with a new lagoon show in the future, set to feature, “new animation featuring characters from favorite Universal attractions, a new storyline, new music, lighting and special effects.” It sounds a bit like Remember Dreams Come True at Disneyland, which celebrates the lands of the park. But Universal’s parks lack that kind of cohesive storytelling, so Universal’s creative teams have a tall order to fill.

But next up, we look forward to checking out the new holiday-themed Hogwarts projection show debuting at Islands of Adventure on November 18.
